Amanda E. Magnoli ANP-BC, AOCNP

A native of Connecticut, Amanda received her Bachelor of Science degree from Siena College in Loudonville, New York, and went on to receive both her nursing degree and Master of Science in Nursing at Yale University School of Nursing. While obtaining her Adult Nurse Practitioner degree, she specialized in oncology and is currently certified as an Adult Oncology Nurse Practitioner by the Oncology Nurses Credentialing Center (ONCC).

Amanda has worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital/Smilow Cancer Hospital in the Thoracic Oncology Program, and spearheaded the Yale Lung Screening and Pulmonary Nodule Program. In 2013, she moved to Texas with her husband and continued her career as an oncology nurse practitioner at MD Anderson Cancer Center, caring for patients with lung, and head and neck malignancies.

Amanda joined New England Cancer Specialists in the summer of 2015 and focuses on the treatment of breast cancer patients from the time of initial diagnosis, through treatment and survivorship. She strongly believes in a clinical team-based care model and the shared decision-making process between patient and provider.

Amanda enjoys spending time with her family and focusing on health and wellness. 

A. Circe Damon ANP-BC

Circe is a Waterville, Maine native and received her BSN from Saint Joseph’s College. She began her nursing career as an RN at Mercy hospital, then moved into home hospice care in the early 1990’s. She helped develop the Outpatient Oncology Unit at Mercy Hospital, and completed the Nurse Practitioner program at Simmons College in 2000. In the years that followed, Circe worked with veterans at Togus VA Hospital, spent many years in GYN oncology, taught at the University of New England, and spent a few years in Bone Marrow transplant at Tufts Medical Center. She has developed Cancer Survivorship Programs for patients who have completed therapy. She is committed and dedicated to the cancer patient and families, working towards improved quality of life and wellbeing. Her interests include integrative oncology care and lifestyle choices to improve patient outcomes. Circe joined New England Cancer Specialists in 2012 excited to work back in her community.

Circe has lived in Portland since 1986, enjoying all the city has to offer. She has 2 grown daughters in the teaching profession, and loves walking her Collie through the Eastern Prom. She loves to hike, camp, run, and travel. She enjoys participating in Maine Audubon activities and Physicians for Social Responsibility. She is working on learning Spanish, to enjoy the southwest and South American countries more richly.

 

Chiara Battelli MD, PhD

President

Dr. Chiara Battelli was born in Fabriano, Italy. She completed medical school and her Oncology Fellowship in Rome. Eager to learn more about the basic mechanism of cancer development, she moved to the US to work in the laboratory of Dr. Maciag at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. During this she met her husband, Mark, a very proud native of Portland, Maine.

After completing the PhD program, Dr. Battelli decided to remain in the United States to follow her lifelong dream of practicing medical oncology. She completed the Residency Program in Internal Medicine at Maine Medical Center and then the Fellowship Program in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston.

She returned to Maine and joined New England Cancer Specialists in September, 2013. Dr. Battelli became president and lead physician of the practice in 2018. Her practice focuses on the treatment of breast cancer. She is particularly interested in clinical and translational research, quality improvement, and medical education. In her spare time Dr. Battelli enjoys her family, her friends and her two English Setters. She loves to travel the world, to experience different cultures and their food.

Christian A. Thomas MD

Medical Director, Clinical Research

Dr. Thomas was born and raised near Frankfurt, Germany. In 1990, after graduating from Goethe University Medical School, he came to Columbia University in New York City to work on a research project, and stayed to complete his residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Thomas met his wife, Elizabeth, in New York, and after completing his fellowship, they left the city for the fresh air and mountains of Vermont in 1999.

He became a partner in a hematology/oncology practice in Colchester, VT and he and his family stayed to enjoy the beauty of the Green Mountain State for 13 years. In 2012, he was delighted to have the opportunity to come to Maine to work at New England Cancer Specialists as a physician and the Director of Clinical Research. His clinical focus is on thoracic cancers (lung and esophageal cancers) as well as genitourinary cancers (prostate, testicular, bladder and kidney cancers). He also serves as an advisor to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society, and CMS/Medicare. He lives in Portland with his wife, a photographer, his three daughters and two dogs. In his free time, he enjoys rowing, cooking, playing squash and getting to know the great state of Maine.

Devon L. Evans MD

Dr. Devon Evans grew up in rural Massachusetts and went to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He did his Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, and his Fellowship at Brown University Medical Center in Rhode Island. He explored other areas of the country through ‘locum tenens’ positions in Martha’s Vineyard, Gresham, OR and Kealakekua, HI before coming to New England Cancer Specialists in 2007.

Dr. Evans is board certified in hematology and oncology, with interests in lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, and brain tumors. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for NeuroOncology, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He states “I became an oncologist with the hope of providing comfort and strength to those made vulnerable by a challenging disease. I am amazed every day by my patients as they fight to live their lives in spite of their cancer, and refuse to let it define them. Their courage remains my inspiration.”

Dr. Evans lives in Cape Elizabeth with his wife and three daughters. His outside interests center on enjoying the wonderful outdoor attractions of Maine with his family:  skiing in the winter, and running, swimming and boating during the summer.

Dixie Knoll FNP-BC

A native of Montana, Dixie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Montana State University. To pay for her education, she worked as a home health aide and was also a Hospice volunteer. With nursing degree in hand, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she worked at the University of Washington Medical Center on a combined oncology/transplant/research floor.  

While pursuing her first graduate degree in Psychosocial nursing, she worked as a home health nurse with combined oncology and AIDs patients. Upon graduation, she moved to Maine and then pursed a second graduate degree at University of Maine at Orono. As a nurse practitioner, Dixie has worked in complimentary medicine, gynecology, and correctional medicine. She has been working at New England Cancer Specialists for 12 years, working primarily with breast cancer patients. 

Regardless of patient population, the focus of Dixie's career has been and continues to be the relationship with her patients and their families.  

John Paul Winters III MD

Dr. Winters was raised in Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma State University. He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma-College of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico and stayed an additional year as Chief Resident. Afterwards, he completed fellowship training in hematology and oncology at the University of Vermont in Burlington where he and his wife fell in love with the people and landscapes of New England. Following fellowship, he spent a year practicing and pursuing outdoor activities in Bend, Oregon before joining New England Cancer Specialists in late 2015.

He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology with interests in benign hematology, malignant hematology, and melanoma. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology. 

Dr. Winters lives in Portland with his wife and their 2 young children. His outside interests include downhill and nordic skiing, snowshoeing, backpacking, running, cooking, and reading fiction.

Mark Wrona MD

Medical Director, Palliative Care

Dr. Wrona was born in Florida, but moved during his first year of life to upstate New York, where he was raised and developed an appreciation for the four seasons. He travelled across the country pursuing his higher education in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Maryland and finally Maine for medical residency training. His areas of medical interest are pain management, palliative care and advanced care planning. He feels privileged to care for the patients of New England Cancer Specialists when they need to be hospitalized.

Dr. Wrona lives with his wife and daughter in Falmouth. He enjoys being outdoors with his family, particularly to go hiking, camping and skiing.

Matthew C. Dugan DO

Dr. Dugan is a native of Connecticut. He received both a B.A. in English and a B.S. in Biology at Wilkes University in PA,  then went for his Master’s in Science at New York University. He chose the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine for his medical degree and trained in residency at Maine Medical Center, and at the University of Vermont for fellowship.

He joined New England Cancer Specialists in 2005, where he has specialized in all cancers of the digestive system and of the head and neck. Dr. Dugan is an associate instructor for Tufts University School of Medicine, at the University of Vermont, and the University of New England. He has published in the New England Journal of Medicine and Cancer Investigation. He is principal investigator on multiple industry and cooperative group clinical trials.

Dr. Dugan resides in Falmouth with his wife and three children. His interests include boating, biking, photography, snow sports and cooking.

Andrea Berry AANP-BC

Palliative Care

Andrea grew up in Newton, MA and Geneva, Switzerland, and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Regis University, she provided inpatient care in oncology and post-bone marrow transplant. 

After taking a brief hiatus from nursing to have children, she worked at the Alfond Cancer Center while getting her Master of Science in Nursing at Walden University, followed by postgraduate work at Graybirch Long Term Care facility in Augusta. She joined New England Cancer Specialists in 2018 as a palliative medicine nurse practitioner. 

Andrea lives in Brunswick with her husband, two children, chocolate lab, Moxie, and rescue cat, Amos. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and exotic foods. 

Betsy Robinson APRN, FNP-C-BC

Born and raised in Maine, Betsy received a BA from Middlebury College, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine. She then spent five years working at Duke University Medical Center on the solid tumor oncology unit and in radiation oncology. 

In 2009, she returned to Maine to raise her family, and worked for more than eight years on the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center. In 2018, she joined New England Cancer Specialists as a Nurse Practitioner. 

Betsy lives with her family in Yarmouth. She enjoys running, doing triathlons, skiing, and the Maine outdoors. 

Jamie L. Theriault AGACNP-BC, OCN

Jamie is a native of Maine and received his bachelor’s at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. He then went on to receive his Master of Science in Nursing at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. While obtaining his Adult Geriatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Degree, his clinical focus was oncology, palliative care, and integrative medicine. Jamie has worked in various areas of oncology care, including Adult Stem Cell Transplant and malignant hematology. In 2008, Jamie moved to St. Louis to pursue a career at Barnes Jewish Hospital, and then to Fort Lauderdale, FL, caring for patients with hematologic malignancies. Jamie joined New England Cancer Specialists in 2018, and focuses on the treatment of malignant and benign hematology from the time of initial diagnosis, through treatment and survivorship.

Jamie lives in Portland and enjoys cycling, yoga and hiking.

Eleni Nackos MD

Dr. Nackos was born and raised in Los Angeles. She completed her pre-medical requirements at the University of Pennsylvania and earned her medical degree at Drexel University in Philadelphia. After completing internal medicine residency at Tufts Medical Center, she received specialized training in hematology and oncology as a fellow at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. She joined New England Cancer Specialists in 2016.

Dr. Nackos is board certified in medical oncology and specializes in breast cancer. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.

Dr. Nackos and her boyfriend live in Portland with a very energetic dog and a talkative cat. In fact, many of her patients met her exuberant lab, Piper, when she was a puppy. She enjoys biking, travel, cooking, reading, basketball, and tooling around on her Vespa.

Julie Hazelton APRN-FNP

Julie grew up in Maine, the daughter of a small-town family physician. Watching her father with patients and hearing him talk about his work sparked her interest in caring for people. She has been working in the field of oncology since 1989 and spent the second year of her practice with a traveling agency, working at hospitals such as Dana-Farber and the University of Chicago’s in the fields of research and bone marrow transplant.

After returning to Maine to get her master’s degree and Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Julie worked with the homeless for the City of Portland for six years. She joined the New England Cancer Specialists team in 2006.

She lives in Westbrook with her two daughters, one in high school and the other in college in Nashville studying music education. They have a dog and two bunnies. Julie enjoys basketball, gardening and playing piano.

Sarah Boucher APRN, FNP-C-BC, AONP

Sarah is a native of Portland. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College, and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine. She has worked in oncology for more than 15 years. Sarah started her nursing career as a registered nurse on Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center. After becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked at Central Maine Medical Center’s Oncology practice for five years before joining NECS in 2017.

Sarah is certified as an Adult Oncology Nurse Practitioner by the Oncology Nurses Credentialing Center (ONCC). She has experience working with a broad range of cancer diagnoses, but currently focuses on cancers of the brain, lung, and gastrointestinal tract. Her philosophy of care is centered around a belief in treating the patient, rather than a disease.

Sarah lives in Portland with her husband and two young children. She enjoys being active, running, swimming, biking, and spending time on the islands of Casco Bay.

Patrick Boland MD

Dr. Boland grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and completed medical school at the University of Minnesota and residency at NYU Langone. He completed his Hematology and Oncology fellowship at Lineberger Cancer Center with the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Boland appreciates NECS’ unique team-based approach to cancer care and healing. His experience with clinical trials drew him to NECS for the depth of our research program and unique association with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He said, “We apply groundbreaking research across multiple specialties to serve as a reliable, hopeful force for each patient and their family.”

When asked about his philosophy of care, Dr. Boland says that “regardless of the care plan I suggest to the patient, I want them to know that they are always in the driver's seat,” following up with “it’s about helping them make the best decision consistent with their wishes and goals.”

Dr. Boland loves to read and has a passion for philosophy, politics, and economics. He also enjoys running, hiking, and trying new local restaurants.

Elizabeth Dennis DO

Medical Director, High-Risk Cancer Genetics and Survivorship

Dr. Dennis is passionate about improving the lives of her patients. She leads two clinical programs at NECS: a high-risk program that focuses on early detection and risk reduction, and our survivorship program for patients who have moved past their cancer treatment and are focusing on their long-term health and any lifestyle adjustments that may be needed.

Dr. Dennis completed her medical education at Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Illinois, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, which is affiliated with Columbia University in upstate New York. She most recently served as the director of an adult cancer survivorship program before joining NECS.

Dr. Dennis is married with two sons and two dachshunds. Away from the office, you're likely to find her outdoors, traveling, or indulging in her passion for ballroom dancing.
